Women’s Script (Yongzhou)

In the history, there has been a special script recording the local dialects, and it was popular in Jiangyong County and its neighboring counties, and Shangxu in Jiangyong County was the center of this script. This script was only used by women, so it was named after “women’s characters”, and its common name was “women’s script”. It was a kind of thin-legs characters of diamond shapes. Its earliest record was about the Diaomu Coins issued by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Women’s Script was usually written on delicate manuscript copies, fan surfaces, cloth handkerchiefs and sheet papers, and sometimes it was woven on brocade. It was usually used for the following purposes: 1. offering sacrifices; 2. recreation of reciting and singing; 3. correspondences communication; 4. telling one’s life experience; 5. recording stories and history; 6. rewriting Chinese characters and verses; 7.embroidery making.
