Yuanshi Cave

Yuanshi Cave

Yuanshi Cave, also named "Guanyin Cave", is in Mingjiu Miao Autonomous
Township or 39 km from Mengzi City. "Yuan Shi" in Chinese means "predestined
ties with lion". Locals there say two Miao ethnic lovers were saved by a
lion from danger; so it is named Yuan Si Dong (Yuanshi Cave).

In the Qing Dynasty, Mr. Cen Yuying (1829-1889) who was the Governor General
of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces praised it as "the No.1 Cave in South Yunnan".
As a matter of fact, Mr. Cen Yuying's praise doesn't mean that the scale of
Yuanshi Cave exceeds those of the Swallow Cave in Jianshui and Ahlu Cave
in Luxi, but refers to the architecture complex and religious connotations.
Situated on the hillside of Jingling Hill, Yuanshi Cave architectures include
dozens of palaces, halls, shrines, pavilions chapels and temples of all sizes.
What is enshrined in these places are Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian figures,
and even heroes and ancestors of minority groups.
