Prefecture. It's surrounded by mountains on its three sides.
One can behold grotesque stony sights
inside the cave and gushing
natural springs at the foot of the cave. Entering the cave by boating,
one may as well marvel at the spectacles of stalagtites and stalagmites
in different shapes such as buds, bamboo shoots and pillars. On the
green mountains around the cave, Guwang Pavilion and Tingli Pavilion
have been built, both looking quaint and in sharp comparison against
the cliffs around. At the foot the cragged cliff, there are three
limpid pools shrouded in ancient woods. One of the pools, whose water
gushes out endlessly, is hidden in the depth of the cave.

Nandu Village is to the upper right of
Nandong Cave. The villagers have
legend that in ancient times, a rhino escaped into the cave from being
hunted by the villagers. Then limpid water was seen flowing out
surprisingly.

Nandong Cave became the top of the “Eight
Sights in Ahmi” (Kaiyuan
City was named "Ahmi" in old times) since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Mr. Yang Shen (1488-1561), a famous scholar in the Ming Dynasty, once
visited Nandong cave. He was captivated by the sceneries here so much
that he delightedly inscribed "南洞" (nán dònɡ) for the cave.
