Nahu Lake Park

Nahu Lake Park

Nanhu Lake (South Lake) is located in the south of Mengzi which is
the capital city of Honghe Prefecture in South Yunnan. The lake
consists of two connected small lakes, covering in all 300,000 square
meters. In the middle of the lake, there are three isles and several
pavilions where, in the past, scholars would always gather to study
and compose poems; therefore, Nanhu Lake was referred to as "A Sea of
Knowledge" (Xue Hai). The famous delicacy-"Cross-bridge Rice Noodle"
 is also derived from here.
What is the most conspicuous is a hexagonal pavilion locally called
"Ying Zhou Ting" (Yingzhou Pavilion. "Yingzhou" is said to be a fairy
mountain on the sea). Having enjoyed a history of some 300 years, the
pavilion is 25 meter high and has been set with wind chimes on its
eaves. When it blows, these chimes sound quite euphonious.
In the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Mengzi was opened up forcibly as
trading port by France. Consulate, customhouse, hotels, church and
firms were then established on the eastern shore of Nanlu Lake. From
April to August 1938, the Law School of the Southwest Union University
was set up in Mengzi where Mr. Wen Yiduo (1899-1946) taught as a
professor of the university; Nanhu hence became a serene place for
both study and tour.
