The rail traffic in Hunan is very developed. Six main railway lines including Beijing-Guangzhou, Hunan-Guiyang, Zhejiang-Jiangxi, Hunan-Guangxi, Shimen-Changsha and Zhicheng-Liuzhou pass through the whole province in different directions, and the Hunan sections of Luoyang-Zhanjiang and Chongqing-Huaihua railway lines have also been put inot service.

On December 26, 2009, Wuhan-Guangzhou railway line for passenger traffic was officially put into transport operation. This line starts from the New Wuhan Railway Station and ends at the South Guangzhou Station, passing by Xianning, Chibi, Yueyang, Changsha, Zhuzhou, Hengyang, Chenzhou, Shaoguan, Qingyuan and Huadu, and its total length is 1,068.6 km. The designed speed per hour for this line is 350 km/h, the maximum speed per hour in trial run is 394.2 km/h, and the gross investment is RMB 116,600 million.Wuhan-Guangzhou railway line for passenger traffic has been placed in the list of China World Records Association as the longest railway line for passenger traffic in China with the highest technical standard, biggest investment amount and highest ticket prices.
Changsha
The Beijing-Guangzhou and Luoyang-Zhanjiang railways go through Changsha from south to north; and the Hangzhou-Zhuzhou, Zhuzhou-Guiyang and Shimen County-Changsha railways link east with west. Trains go from the Changsha Railway Station to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning and Harbin regularly.

Zhuzhou
The Zhuzhou Railway Station is located in Mid Renmin Road, Lusong District. Trains go from Zhuzhou to Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Kunming, Xi'an, Guangzhou and other cities regularly.

Xiangtan
Xiangtan railway station is situated in Yuhu District, and trains go directly from Xiangtan to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guiyang, Wuchang, Changsha and other large cities in China. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and Zhuzhou-Guiyang Railway run through Xiangtan. The electrified double line section of the Zhuzhou-Guiyang Railways has gone into operation, making the communications in Xiangtan more convenient and comfortable.

Yueyang
The Yueyang Railway Station is located in Xianfeng Road, Yueyang, and the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway runs through the city. Everyday more than 70 trains leave the Yueyang Railway Station for Beijing, Jinan, Guangzhou, Guilin, Wuhan, Kunming, Changsha, Hengyang and other cities.

Yiyang
Yiyang Railway Station is located in Ziyang District. The Changsha-Shimen and Luoyang-Zhanjiang railways meet here, and trains go from Yiyang to Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities in China regularly.

Loudi
The Luoyang-Zhanjiang Railway and the Hunan-Guizhou Railway cross each other in the downtown area. Passengers can go to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Wuchang, Changsha, Zhangjiajie and Huaihua from Loudi Railway Station.

Hengyang
Train go regularly from the Hengyang Railway Station to Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Yueyang and Yongzhou. The special railway from Wuchang to Guangzhou will be on service soon. By then, the trips from Hengyang to Guangzhou or Wuhan will take only two hours or so.

Chenzhou
The trains that depart from Chenzhou Railway Station mainly go to Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Changsha, Zhangjiajie , Hengyang and other larger and medium-sized cities.

Yongzhou
Located in the city proper of Yongzhou ,The Yongzhou Railway Station has trains to Bejing, Shanghai, Kunming, Guilin, Nanning, Xi'an and Zhengzhou and other large and medium-sized cities in China everyday; and the short-distance trains to Changsha, Zhangjiajie and other cities in Hunan province regularly.

Zhangjiajie
The rail line of Zhangjiajie is connected with the Shishou-Changsha Railway and the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. By train, tourists can go from Zhangjiajie to a dozen major cities including Changsha, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Changde
The Changde Railway Station is in the northern part of the urban area. This is the station with the largest prefecture-level railway station in Hunan Province. Regular trains go to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiangfan, Zhangjiajie and Changsha. Passengers can take Nos.15, 17, 19, 20, or 28 to the railway station.

Xiangxi
Direct trains link the city of Jishou with Bejing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Zhicheng-liuzhou Railway runs through the region from north to south, leading to Beijing, Shenzhen and other cities.

Shaoyang
The city of Shaoyang is a transportation hub in Southwestern Hunan. Nos. 320 and 207 national highways, Shanghai-Ruili Expressway pass through the city. Passengers can go to various places in China on Loudi-Shaoyang Railway which is connected with Hunan-Guizhou Railway. The seven river passageways have a total length of more than 800 km.
Huaihua
The long-distance trains that pass through Huaihua go to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. Some short-distance trains reach to Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Zhuzhou and other cities in Hunan Province.
