Shaoshan Mountain was originally under the jurisdiction of the people of Miao ethnic group. When Emperor Shun traveled to the South, he asked people to play Shaoyue for three days and three nights, and then the people of Miao ethnic group were put on the right path by this music. Since then on, this place was named after “Shaoshan”. Currently, the Shaoyue which can be presented to the audience can be classified into three parts: Songs, Odes, Hymns, and the performance lasts for 70 minutes. Songs, Odes and Hymns stem from the Book of Poetry in the Spring and Autumn Period, and Songs represent folk songs, Odes represent court music, and Hymns represent music for aristocrats' sacrifice offering to ancestral temples. The musical instruments of Shaoyue are mainly chime bells, and they are a collection of exquisite ancient chime bells. There are over 160 chime bells of 30 kinds in total, and the integrality of musical instruments, troupe scale and composition and music euphony are all of first class in the world.
