Hunan Photographer Wins World Press Photo Award

The 3rd Prize Arts and Entertainment Stories: "The Return of The Native" by Kuang Huimin. In November, 2009, a 32-meter-high statue of Chinese former leader Mao Zedong in his youth was built on Orange Isle, Changsha City, Hunan Province.

On May 16, 2011, a 22-year-old girl in a wedding gown was grabbed as she attempted to kill herself by jumping out of a building in Changchun, Jilin Province.
Winners of the prestigious 55th annual World Press Photo competition were announced in Amsterdam at 6 p.m., February 10, 2012, Beijing Time. Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda received the prize for World Press Photo of the Year for an image of a veiled woman holding a wounded relative in her arms after a demonstration in Sana'a, capital city of Yemen.
Three Chinese photographers won awards at the contest, including Kuang Huimin from Mao Zedong's hometown Xiangtan, Hunan Province. His picture "The Return of The Native" took the third prize in the Arts and Entertainment Stories category. He is the first Hunan photographer to capture a World Press Photo award.
