Yongzhou

Yongzhou

Yongzhou, located in the south of Hunan Province and upper reaches of Xiang River, gained the name of “Xiaoxiang”, where Xiang River and Xiao River meet here. Yongzhou, a famous historical and cultural city of Hunan, attracting distinguished stele forest of South China, is located in the east, 50 km to Yongzhou.

Jiuyi Mountain Scenic Zone
In the southern part of Ningyuan County, Yongzhou City, Jiuyi Mountain boasts of the ruined peak forest of the ancient tropical zone. The mountain is a habitat of many rare plants and wild animals, such as Jiuyi spotted bamboo, which is rarely seen in the world. In ancient China, the emperors of different dynasties often came to the mountain to pay homage to the Mausoleum of Emperor Shundi.
Emperor Shundi Mountain National Forest Park
In the northwest of Dong’an County, 75km from Yongzhou City, it was originally called Jingfeng (Golden Phoenix) Mountain and later it was renamed Emperor Shundi Mountain because Emperor Shundi once went hunting in the mountain. In the park, the mountain, water, rocks and hills constitute picturesque scenes while rocks, springs, trees and vines set each other off and form a pleasing contrast.
Wuxi Stele Forest
Situated in the southwest of the county town of Qiyang County, it is the largest stele forest in the open air in South China, and a key historical monument under state protection. The most famous steles are Ode to the Flourishing Song Dynasty and Ode to the Flourishing Ming Dynasty.
Ancient Village of Shanggangtang
Situated in Jiangyong County, Yongzhou City, the ancient village was first constructed in the Taihe reign (827-835) of the Tang Dynasty, with a history of over 1,000 years. In the shape of a taiji symbol, which consists of a circle with S-shaped dividing line between white and black halves, the ancient village is well preserved. The main tourist attractions in the village include the Buying Bridge, Wenchang Pavilion and the stone bridge of the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220).
Jiangyong Woman Script
In the 1980s, philologists found a miraculous systematic set of letter symbols in Shangjiangxu Town in Jiangyong County, and it is called “woman script”. Its character structure, pronunciation and other characteristics are all very unique, and it is the only odd script found in the world.

In order to preserve the “living fossil” of ancient culture, the concerning authorities of Jiangyong County found the “Shangjiangxu Woman Script Garden” with a building area of 2,000 square meters, and it is in the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty with distinctive regional colors. In the garden there is a front court and a backyard. Visitors can have rests and spend a leisure time in the front court. In the backyard there are Woman Script Classroom, Comprehensive Hall, Exhibition Hall of Woman Script Painting and Calligraphy Works, and Exhibition Hall of Woman Script Craftworks.
