Covering more than 20,000 square meters, the main exhibition building with two watchtowers is a grand and splendid traditional establishment built in a classic Chinese style, with an air of elegance and dignity. As the only comprehensive historical museum in the Luoyang area, the Luoyang Museum has 400,000 pieces of valuable ancient relics of all dynasties unearthed in Luoyang which are famous for their quantity, quality, variety and the superiority in taste. Among them are the distinguished ones like the bronze wares, the colored pottery tomb figures and the Tang sancai (the tri-colored pottery horses originated in the Tang Dynasty) which have enjoyed great fame all over the world. Almost one thousand pieces of rare cultural relics exhibited fall into five categories, namely the periods of the pre-historic era, the Xia & Shang Dynasties, the Western Wei & Eastern Wei Dynasties, the Han & Wei Dynasties and the Sui & Tang Dynasties. This exhibition highlights on valuable antiques including the elephant fossils 50,000 years ago; the colored potteries of the New Stone Age; the bronze ceremony wares of the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties; the colored pottery wares and pottery opera figures of the Han and Wei Dynasties and the colored pottery performers and the vivid Tang sancai of bright colors in different postures made in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Among them, the bronze jue (an ancient wine vessel with three legs and a loop handle) of the Xia Dynasty, the gold, silver, bronze tripods of the Warring States Period, the pottery sculptures of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the Tang sancai lamps and horses are indeed the invaluable treasures of the nation. With its rich items on display, valuable antiques, superior service and unique charm, the Luoyang Museum receives more than 100,000 visitors each year from all corners of the world, serving as a window for the spread of the culture of the ancient capital city of Luoyang as well as an ideal spot for patriotic education.
