Shirenshan Scenic Area, a section of the east Funiu Mountains, is located at the west of the Lushan County of Pingdingshan City. Shirenshan was once named “Mount Yao” by the ancient inhabitants after the Memorial Temple of Emperor Yao which was built by Liu Lei, a descendant of Yao. The peak, Yuhuangding, is 2,153.1 meters above the sea level. Shirenshan is an ideal place for sightseeing, summer holidays, health-restoring, science research and adventure. It may be described as a combination of the precipitous appeal of Huashan Mountain, the steepness of the Ermei Mountain, the beauty of Zhangjiajie and the elegance of the Huangshan Mountain.

Shirenshan Scenic Area is a marvelous collection of various sceneries, boasting steep peaks, fancy rocks, wild flowers, red leaves, rushing waterfalls, hot springs, lakes, sea of clouds, virgin forests, rare animals and many historical sites. There are 17 waterfalls with a height between 60 and 200 meters, more than 40 natural pillars and lots of other sights scattered all over the area.
Lying on the boundary between the subtropical zone and the warm temperate zone, Shirenshan is abundant in wildlife resources.

Sights of Shirenshan in four seasons are of great beauty. When spring comes, Shirenshan is a world of twittering birds, fragrant flowers, green trees and singing streams. The autumn dyes all the woods red over the mountains. Then, the snow in winter turns them into a sea of pure white waves. The early summer brings overdue flowers to the mountains. While the central plain of China is burning with an average temperature of 35-38 in midsummer, Shirenshan has only 23-26, cool and comfortable.
With mountains rising as steep as walls, peaks standing like grotesque statues, fantastic stones scattering everywhere, the scenery of Shirenshan is distinctive. Standing on the
peak of Yuhuangding, visitors will be impressed by the splendid view of mountains stretching afar to the end of the horizon.
The most impressive sceneries are the springs, brooks, waterfalls and pools. Hundreds of springs, like fairies in the mountain, flow into limpid brooks, changing into waterfalls. The water constantly dripping wears holes in stones and the holes developing into pools. There are Black Dragon Pool, White Dragon Pool, etc., hiding in the valleys and forests. Among all the waterfalls, the White Dragon waterfall is the most magnificent. The water directly falls from the top of the hill like a dragon flying down with the sound like a tiger roaring. At the bottom, the beads of water float gently down to the surface of the pool. In the air, the mist is mixed with clouds and water sprays.

The waters make up a painting of landscape while the stones form a poem of landscape. As the
Shiren
Mountain is composed of granite, its ridges became deformed by the fissuring of the rocks over millions of years. Stone peaks standing in great numbers and perilous cliffs accumulating layer upon layer characterize the scenery of granite forests. There are nearly one hundred peaks with a height of 2000 meters above the sea level. Looking around in the distance, the peaks hide in the clouds and smokes while at a close look they have the magnificence of the palaces of the Qin and Han Dynasties. The scenic spots have various styles: the spectacular Thousand Feet Cliff, the elegant Phoenix Stage, the smooth Sister Peaks and the vigorous White
Cow City.
The pine trees in the Shiren Mountain are quite unique due to special weather and high altitude. Roots or trunks are entwined together, revealing emerald green leaves; some roots are extremely similar to fingers of dragons; some in the distance look like certain Chinese characters while on the whole they form a landscape painting. Thus, they are well entitled the name of “Fancy Pines”.

It is water that makes the mountain beautiful. The Shiren Mountain boasts numerous marvelous waterfalls and streams. Limpid streams of the Black Dragon Pool, the White Dragon Pool and the Eastern Dragon Pool flow down the mountain: Some are like tigers roaring in the valley; some like gentle ladies, flowing quietly.

The most marvelous roadway on the Shiren Mountain is the sliding channel, which is over 2,000 meters long, zigzagging down the mountain in the thick forests. The tourists can enjoy the sliding and experience once more the past happiness of childhood.

Shifeng (Stone Phoenix) cableway, 999 meters long and with a height of 341 meters, moves from the Shiren Valley to the south of Fenghuangtai. The cableway has 70 cabins which can carry 320 visitors per hour. As for the General Peak, you can reach it by climbing stairs from the Red Maple Valley to the Silver Thread Waterfall and then take the cableway. By the cableway, you can enjoy red maples, watching life-like stone monkeys. Reaching the Yuhuang Peak, you will be intoxicated with the sea of clouds.
Thanks to favorable geographical conditions, the Shiren Mountain is very abundant in resources of plants and animals. According to the preliminary surveys, the Shiren Mountain has more than 1,211 species of plants, plus epirhizous and ferns. The entire plant species amount to over 4,000, among which over 40 have been listed as plants under state and provincial protection. In the scenic area, there are large expanses of virgin forests, rare ancient forests of azalea trees and so on. All together, the total number of ancient trees over one thousand years amount to 150,000. As the plants have provided a good habitat for rare birds and beasts, there are over 125 terrestrial vertebrate animal species, large numbers of aquatic animals and invertebrate animals in the area. Walking in the area, you can see squirrels skipping around everywhere, birds chirping in the forests, monkeys climbing up trees.
Having feasted your eyes on the natural scenery, you can then relax by immersing in the hot springs of the scenic area. Along the Sand River Valley at the foot of the Shiren Mountain, there are five groups of hot springs. The temperature of the springs can reach as high as 60 degrees centigrade. With more than 20 kinds of microelements, the hot springs have very good medical value. Moreover, the scenic area of the Shiren Mountain is dotted with other scenic spots, including a folk custom valley, a temple of Confucius, a Mountain Villa, and the largest aeronautic exhibition center in Asia.
