Yellow Emperor, Xuanyuan, is called the founder of the Chinese
nation. His mausoleum lies in Huangling County in Shaanxi province, and
is where the county got its name. There are memorial ceremonies
performed in memory of Yellow Emperor. Since the Han Dynasty (206BC-220)
the memorial ceremonies were a fixed activity of the court.
In 1911, Sun Yat-sen, an outstanding forerunner of the democratic
revolution in modern China, took and assigned some people to perform
memorial ceremonies in the Mausoleum of Yellow Emperor. Chairman Mao
wrote compositions about these memorial ceremonies.

The memorial activities have formed certain patterns and ceremonies
and can be classified into official ceremonies and folk ceremonies.
Nowadays, the official ceremony is grand and solemn while the folk
ceremonies don't follow fixed patterns and just go with the wills and
customs of the people. The folk ceremonies not only keep some of the
traditions of the official ceremonies but also display strong local
color.
After the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in
1949, the memorial ceremonies at the Yellow Emperor's Mausoleum have
attracted more and more attention from Chinese both at home and abroad
and the scale of the ceremony has become larger and larger. The ceremony
has become an important activity in passing on Chinese civilization to
future generations.
