Lingling's Guan Yu Temple Successfully Excavated

DATE:06-07-2012
Great progress has been made to the excavation of Guan Yu Temple in Lingling after the archaeologists' hard work for two months (Guan Yu is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness in late Eastern Han Dynasty. He was later given the title "Saintly Emperor Guan" and is worshipped in Buddhism and Taoism). Centered on the Mahavira Hall of the extant temple, five platforms were discovered successively on the axile line which is over 300 meters long. The excavated architectural base fully shows the building structure of this Ming Dynasty temple dating back to 600 years.
Located at the top of the East Mountain in the ancient town of Yongzhou, the temple was specially built for worshiping and offering sacrifices to Guan Yu. The extant temple, covering a floor area of 700 square meters, was renovated in 1884.
The primary-stage excavation will be finished in recent days and it paves the way for the protecting and utilizing of the temple as well as the development of East Mountain scenic spot. The restoration will be done centering on Guan Yu Temple of Qing Dynasty.
