Facing Mangshan hill to the south and the Yellow River to the north, Guangwu’s Mausoleum is shaded by verdant cypresses. There is a large-size stone sculpture for fighting off evil spirits within the Mountain Gate which was excavated from the front of Emperor Guangwu’s Tomb. It’s a treasure of stone carving in the Han Dynasty. The Mausoleum is rectangular in shape, covering an area of 66,000 square meters. In the middle of the graveyard is a mound in semicircle shape, 487 meters in circumference and 17.83 meters tall.
Guangwu’s Mausoleum is a rare garden of
characteristics in China. Compared with other imperial tombs, it has
four unique features. First, it is different in its location choice.
Other imperial tombs of different Dynasties used to face rivers and
stand by mountains at the back. Their tombs were built on large tracts
of open land as the emperors’ broad mind and ultimate supremacy. Only
Emperor Guangwu’s Mausoleum rests on the brink of the Yellow River with
the Mangshan hill in front. Second, there are 1,458 cypresses planted
during the Sui and Tang Dynasties in the graveyard. The Mausoleum is
imbued with a solemn silence shaded by the sky-high ancient cypresses.
It is unparalleled compared with other imperial tombs. Third, the wood
of these ancient cypresses is rare with an apricot fragrance, so they
are called" apricot cypresses”. The cypresses are the only arbor of its
kind left in China. Fourth, the mist in the twilight of the Han Tomb is a
sheer wonder. During the Qingming Festival, and when the first ray of
the morning sun appears, if the weather is clear, smoke will rise from
the branches and leaves, like floating clouds. Soon the entire graveyard
is covered with mist. If one is there at that time, they seem to have a
tour in a fairyland.
The Grandmother Cypress In addition to these four features, there are three wonderful sights in the chirping. The first are the marvelous chirping cypresses. If you clap your hands under the cypresses, you will hear the echo of chirping. The second is the chinaberry cypress. It is a symbol that Liu Xiu and Yin Lihua, his empress, loved deeply and reluctant to part. The third is the marvelous spectacle of seeing the emperor lying on his back. Looking from a distance of 300 meters northwest from the Mausoleum, the outline of the cypresses gives the appearance of Emperor Guangwu lying on his back. This sight is indeed worthy.
