Bixi Old Town Of Mojiang
Bixi town of Mojiang County is on the golden travel route of the
Kunming-Bangkok Highway. 152 km north to Simao District, the
town is 9 km from the county seat of Mojiang which is dubbed the
Twin City of China.
The
history of Bixi can date back to the 1400s when a town began
to be established. It is where Confucian culture has spread to, where
thousands of merchants swarmed into, and yet where a culture has
been well developed.

Bixi
(Old) Town used to be an important stop on the Ancient
Tea-Horse Trail (also the Ancient Tea-Hose Road). Before 1949,
escorted caravans of numerous trade companies were often seen
and heard tinkling into the town for accommodations. At that
time, the town was prosperous with dozens of shops and stables
oriented to horse caravans. And what the locals offered were,
most of the time, saddles, different shoeing stuff (such as horseshoes),
straw shoes, and groceries. Nearly every family then had a trough
and pole for tying horses to; and the largest inn here has been said
to have the capacity of stabling up to 100 horses and mules.

As
the local elderly recall, there were as many as one thousand
caravan's horses travelling through here each day. But what has been
left behind today are countless mysteries and questions about caravans.

A
southwards road tour from Kunming is recommended, though you can
fly (40 minutes) directly to Pu'er and detour northwards to Mojiang County.
