Other honors it has been awarded include the National Ecological Demonstration Area, National Geo-park, National Youth Science Education Base and so on. The imposing mountains and vast virgin forests lend the place colorful resources as well as beautiful sceneries, all of which have made it the centre of ecological diversity in Henan Province and the best preserved area at same latitudes. Lying in the transitional edge from the second-level terrace to the third-level terrace in the country, the place, 1830m above the sea level, is the highest part of the south-eastern extensions of Mt. Funiu. Guarding the north-western cold snap off and trapping the warm-humid currents from subtropical regions, the place is typical of a transitional climate from northern subtropical zone to warm temperate zone. It is a fertile land with a unique ecological environment, which boasts rich vegetation resources and a forest coverage amounting to 95.8%. There are many rare and old species living here. In the reserve area, there are 2,911 species of plants, covering 80% of the total in Henan. As the place where inhabit the most concentrating and abundant species in Henan, 29 of them are national key protection species and 52 are categorized as rare and peculiar wild plants. Of the 201 land vertebrate species in the reserve, there are 25 kinds of national key protection animals, such as leopards, Golden Eagles, giant salamanders and Golden Pheasants. Numerous dinosaur eggs and fossils in the neighborhood indicate the reserve has an old geological history which best represents the structure of Qinling Mountain. Among all the beautiful natural landscapes, the cliffs and rocks of different shapes could be seen everywhere, such as the deep and steep Saozhou Cliff, Jingziduo, Guofeng Cliff, Muhuding, Huashijian and so on. Standing on the main peak with a height of 1 , 830m above the sea level, one can have a panoramic view of the attraction. Among the animal species, there are more than 100 kinds such as tigers, leopards, deer, roe deer, antelopes, otters, giant salamanders, golden pheasants and so on. There are over 1,055 kinds of medicinal herbs such as Jinshisan (JSS), Rhizomn Gastrodiae, musk, Cornus officinalis, Chinese Thorowax Root, Balloonflowers and so on. The flora and fauna here play a significant role in the study of the transition of vegetations, the introduction and acclimatization of animals and plants and the change of ecological systems. On the peak there are remains of a temple where a stone table stands, dated back to the Ming Dynasty. Broom Peak Located northwestern of Baotianman Mountain, it is abundant in bamboos. The local people make their brooms with bamboos and therefore it gets the name. As one of the main peaks along the ridge of Mt. Funiu, it extends north to south with an altitude of 1,780m. There are over 1,000 wild plant species and 900 medicinal herbs, which make the place a scientific base for the study of animals, plants and natural secondary forests. Tiger Peak Located southeast of Baotianman Mountains, by all accounts it derived its name because a hunter captured a tiger here. One of the main peaks in Funiu Mountains, it extends east to west with an altitude of 1,795m. The granite that constitutes the mountain could be dated back to 0.14-0.195 billion years ago. It is a place that has never suffered from damage of any kind and therefore there are numerous virgin forests on the mountain. Owing to destructions of the ecological system down the mountain, some rare tree species and animals could be found in this little heaven. In addition, various specimens of animals and plants, living in south or north, could be traced here. Fossil Peak Located southwest of the nature reserve, it derived its name from its protruding fossil-bearing rocks. Extending east to west, the peak has an altitude of 1,641m. There are various plants and animals living here. Heart Peak Located southwest of the nature reserve, it derived its name for its heart shape. Extending east to west, it has an altitude of 1,300m. The granite and marble that constitute the mountain body could be dated 0.4-0.6 billion years ago. On the southern and northern sides of the peak are mainly deep and steep cliffs and the terrains slow down on the eastern and western sides. Surrounded by rivers from three sides, it has a picturesque landscape. The natural resources include rare tree species, wild animals and medicinal herbs of high values. In the western part, gold and marble mines are discovered with abundant reserves. Among the high peaks and thick forests, creeks, waterfalls and ponds are dotted everywhere in the reserve area. In addition, waterfalls in Seven Star Pool and Five Dragon Pool have gained a lot of popularity for their unique features. Moreover, various stalactite grottos have formed a lot of sights in the attraction, such as the Tianxin cave, Xianren cave, Stalactite cave complex, Wind cave and so on. Five Dragon Pool Located on Manzi Mountain, the southern extension of Baotianman Mountain, it derived its name from five pools that came out as a result of waterfalls coming down the valleys. The five pools, namely, Yellow Dragon Pool, Red Dragon Pool, White Dragon Pool, Purple Dragon Pool, and Black Dragon Pool, are said to be the places where pythons transformed into dragons. With the most spectacular view, the Black Dragon Pool is formed by an 80m high waterfall running down from the cliff. Seven Star Pond As the key tourism development section at the south foot of Baotianman Mountain, it has become a hot tourist route. Along the 10km long valley, there are standing imposing peaks and steep cliffs. The clear water flows over the granite river bed and fancy stones on the bed have added to more fun. Into the attraction, there is a 2km long section which is reputed for the countless hanging stones. Stacks of stones have shaped many peaks which give people a false impression that they were built, but actually it is a work of nature. Seven Star Pond, the main part of the attraction, features steep terrains and overlapping waterfalls. The granite body of the mountain is divided into seven levels and the Qitan River runs down them to make a waterfall screen. The pond, shaped as a result of water erosion, is deep, pure and clear. Besides, the Tianjing waterfall, not far from the pond, runs down with a height of over 80m and makes an imposing view. Tianxin Cave Tianxin Cave lies in the middle of Duguduo Peak, the southern extension of Baotianman Mountain. Right in the centre of steep cliffs, the cave leads down to the heart of the mountain and hence its name is derived. A shaft-like stalactite cave, the outlet is narrow and it is spacious inside. Over 20m down, there are two connected spaces with a total area of around 800m² and the heights of walls range from 10m to 30m. The colored decoration patterns, one wonder of the nature, are a unique part of the cave. The stalactites in the cave are in different shapes and sizes, giving endless associations to household stories in Chinese mythology such as the Children-Sending Guan Yin, Seven Fairies, and Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and so on. Many branches and side caves could be found here. Owing to its size and tourism values, the place has been developed into an attractive sight at the south foot of Baotianman Mountain. The Cave of Immortals The Cave of Immortals lies right at the foot of Dadong Mountain, the northern extension of Baotianman Mountain. In a river valley where many steep cliffs are standing out, the Songhe River is flowing by before the cave. The entrance, several meters high, looks like a mouth of a titan in the wall. Into the entrance there is a stone hall so spacious as to hold several thousand people. The stalactites and stalagmites could be seen everywhere. Many minor caves connect with each other, making an impressive network. Once in the hall there were many statues of gods, among which 18 Arhats are the most famous. Around the edges of the hall are the caves leading to the inside. Climbing the walls, one may wind his way through other caves, halls and sky wells. A journey in this maze-like place gives one a lot of surprises and joys. The cave is also the place where numerous bats inhabit. As to the depth of the cave, there are no definite answers. The Nanzhao County Records, a book compiled in the Qing Dynasty, says there are caves inside the caves and the deeper one goes, the narrower it gets. Around one day’s walk leads to many other caves under which the slowly flowing rivers could be heard, but not be seen. Then there is a big cave with a blue pool inside. The stones in the pool can’t be measured and the cold air around nips. A big log is spanning across the pool like a bridge, but no one dares to pass on it. Legend has it that there was once a beautiful maid, in order to cure his father’s illness, coming to catch some shrimps and crabs in the Songhe River and got trapped in the cave. Enlightened by an immortal, she finally became a fairy and that’s how the cave got its name. The Karst Caverns The Karst Caverns, facing the Baotianman Peak, is constituted by fine marbles. Owing to natural weathering on the surface, there have arisen many stalactite grottos in the area. Coming into the round grotto entrance, there is plenty of space inside. It is going to be a lot of fun winding one’s way out. In the entire year it remains humid in the grottos and the natural weathering has formed many stalactite columns of different shapes. Coming into the maze of these shiny stones, one may feel like he is in a crystal palace. With a length of nearly 1km, it leads to the mountain peak. Currently there is a main cave stretching over 500m and several side caves with depths ranging from 5m to 20m. Three channels into the main cave, there is an oval sky well which is over 30m in diameter and over 10m in height. The bottom, wall and roof are all made of stalactite. After the sky well the road forks out into two parts, leading to two big channels where all kinds of stalactites are well preserved. Just beside the main cave stands a side cave of around 12m high, which leads down to other channels. These caves, combined with other small ones, have formed a cluster of stalactite caverns. Right in the arms of 800km long Funiu Mountains, the Baotianman Nature Reserve Area stand out in Henan with its beautiful sceneries. A place richly endowed by nature, it is expecting your kind company.
