The "人"-Shaped Bridge On Yunnan-Vietnam Railway

The "人"-Shaped Bridge On Yunnan-Vietnam Railway

The "人"-Shaped Bridge (Ren Zi Qiao."人"-rén) is an engineering wonder
on the Pingbian Section of Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. The bridge is 52
km from Pingbian county seat of Honghe Prefecture. In June 2006, it
was listed as important historical and cultural site of China.
Designed by the French engineer Ms. Paul Bodin, the bridge began to
be constructed in March 1907 and completed in December 1908. As the
first railway in Yunnan’s history, Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is as well
the first railway linking China and foreign countries. Yunnan-Vietnam
Railway is totally 855 km from Haiphong to Kunming-the capital city
of Yunnan Province.  Because of its narrow gauge of merely one meter,
the railway is also called "One-meter Gauge Railway". Yunnan-Vietnam
Railway not only is a linkage between a variety of ethnic groups and
multiple cultures, but also plays a vital role in trans-national
cultural and economic exchanges.
