Jiaopingdu Red Army Memorial

Jiaopingdu Red Army Memorial

Located in Hongmen Village of Jiaopingdu Town of Luquan County,
Jiaopingdu Ferry has served since ancient times as an important
passage linking North Yunnan and South Sichuan on the riverbanks
of the Yangtze (locally called Jinsha River).
During the Long March in May 1935, over 30,000 Red Army soldiers
headed by Mao Zedong (1893-1976), Zhou Enlai (1898-1976) and
Zhu De (1886-1976) entered Luquan County and seized Jiaopingdu
Ferry on the Jinsha River. With the utmost help of local civilians
including 36 boatmen, the Red Army spent nine days crossing
over the Jinsha River, laying firm foundation for the onwards
success of the Long March.
In 1983, Jiaopingdu Ferry was listed as an important historic
and cultural site by Yunnan Provincial Government. In 1992,
copper sculptures were specially made as monuments here.
And in 2002, a new memorial hall was erected and opened to
tourists.  (Picture from kunming.cn)
