Xinxiang,
located to the north of the Yellow River and to the south of the
Taihang Mountain, is one of the cradles of the Chinese civilization. The
Battle of Muye (1046 B.C. at the turn of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties),
was a famous battle in history, took place on this land. The
continental climate of the North Temperate Zone here is characterized by
four distinct seasons, with a cold winter and a hot summer besides a
comparatively moderate spring and autumn. The annual average temperature
here is 14.6℃ and the annual precipitation is 573.4 mm.
Xinxiang is an environment-friendly city. The south part of Taihang
Mountains, which presents a natural picture of verdant woods, running
waterfalls, flowing streams, perilous peaks and gorgeous rocks, expands
for thousands of square kilometers. The Yellow River winds through
Xinxiang, extending about 170 kilometers, and all the year round its
banks are lined with green grass and shadowy forests. The ancient course
of Yellow River, which was formed as the result of the repeated bursts
and diversions of Yellow River, preserves numerous lakes, bogs and
marshes. Xinxiang is dressed in green with verdant woods, flourishing
grass and the vast expanse of waters.
Xinxiang is a city with many different colorful cultures. Traces of
people have been found here that date back to as early as 8000 years
ago. First named, Yong State in ancient times over 1400 years ago,
Xinxiang was under the administration of two kingdoms during the Spring
and Autumn Period, and the Warring States Period. In the Han Dynasty, it
was renamed Huojia State which remained until the year A.D.586 of the
Sui Dynasty when Xinxiang was set up as a county. In the long river of
history, Xinxiang witnessed such great events as: Muye Battle (the war
at the end of Shang dynasty BC1600—1046, which compelled King Zhou to
set fire to himself), and the wars during the Warring States period and
the Han Dynasty. Many historical celebrities or hermits were either
born here or had visited here, leaving many anecdotes and excellent
literary works, including the statesmen such as, Jiang Shang ( the
minister of King Wu of Zhou Dynasty) and Bi Gan ( the minister of King
Zhou of Shang Dynasty ); litterateurs or poets such as Li Bai,(618
A.D.—907A.D. of the Tang Dynasty), Su Shi, (1127 A.D.—1279 A.D. of the
Southern Song Dynasty), Yue Fei: the famous general from the Southern
Song Dynasty, the Qianlong Emperor: a famous Emperor from the Qing
Dynasty (618 A.D.—907A.D.), Yuan Shikai: the first President of Republic
of China ( 1911 A.D.—1949 A.D.), Xu Shichang: the fifth President of
Republic of China, as well as many other notable people from Chinese
history.
Xinxiang is an ideal choice for tourism. You will feel relaxed and
happy here with several choices of scenery available: a visit in the
mountains, a rest in the cottage; tasting Henan food, watching the Henan
Opera, or immersing yourself in the picturesque and natural scenery, as
well as enjoying the simple and traditional customs here.
The snacks and other regional specialties in Xinxiang include pork
cooked in pot, Simahuai chicken, fried fish with sweet sauce, Changyuan
deep-fried dough sticks with eggs, red braised mutton and Yuanyang Rice.
