Bayan Nur (Mongolian:; Traditional Chinese: 巴彥淖爾; Simplified Chinese: 巴彦淖尔) is a prefecture-level city in western Inner Mongolia. Until December 1, 2003, the area was called the Bayan Nur league.Bayan Nur city has an area of 65,788 km². It borders Mongolia to the north, Alxa to the west, Ordos to the south and Baotou to the east.
In Mongolian, Bayan Nur means“rich lake”, with 29 minorities under control. Early in the primitive society our ancestors began to multiple their descendants here and commonly created the splendid Hetao culture, making indelible contributions to civilization and advance of the world.

The city has a long history and many historical and cultural relics are still in existence till today, such as ancient tombs and an ancient town of the Han Dynasty, the Great Wall of the Qin and the Han Dynasties, rock paintings in the Yinshan Mountains and the Agui Lamasery of the red sect, etc. The Urad Plateau Grassland, the hilly land at the foot of the Yinshan Mountains, the Hetao Plain, the Ulanbuh Desert, the Yellow River and the Wuliangsuhai Lake constitute the fascinating natural scenery of the area.
