Wenchang

 
Wenchang City is 40km from Haikou's Meilan International Airport. It has a coastline of 206.07km including 40 bays. Wenchang's total arrea is 2488 sq km, taking up 7% of Hainan Island.
Engulfed by the sea on three sides, Wenchang has many great bays and beaches.Wenchang is the source of most overseas Hainanese migrants, with the majority of Singapore's Hainanese population having ancestral roots in Wenchang. The Wenchang dialect of Hainanese is considered the standard dialect of Hainan. Wenchang is known for a love of volleyball, incredible numbers of coconuts, and white beaches.

Wenchang is the ancestral home of the famous Soong sisters: Soong Ching-ling, Soong Ai-ling, Soong May-ling and the birthplace of their father Charlie Soong.
This is a coastal resort city that combines tropical scenery with cultural relics. There are coconut trees, beautiful bays, natural hot springs, the world-famous residence of the Soong Family, Wenchang chicken, and golf courses. Every step brings new breathtaking vistas, and truly unforgettable memories.

Attractions:

The Wenchang Satellite Launch Center: This is China's fourth and southernmost space vehicle launch facility and because of its low latitude, the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center has been selected to launch China's space station. On 22 September 2007, CCTV officially announced the construction of an expanded Wenchang Satellite Launch Center has been approved by the State Council and theCentral Military Commission of the People's Republic of China.

Confucius Temple, one of the oldest building on the island, and Wenchang School, a prestigious school funded by many overseas Chinese. Some of the best preserved examples of ancient architecture in Hainan. The temple was first built during the 11th century, after repeated renovation and expansion since the Ming Dynasty. 15 yuan entrance fee.
Tonggu Ridge provides an easy escape from the busy downtown of Wenchang and has stunning views on the coastline of Hainan island covered by hundreds of thousands of coconut trees.

Dongjiao Coconut Groves (东郊椰林). A beautiful quiet spot to spend a few days. Mounds of discarded coconut husks lie under the multitudes of palm trees, a testament to the incredible numbers of coconuts grown in this area. There are a good number of basic guesthouses and restaurants along with a resort on the sea. English is not spoken by the majority of locals.
Gaolong Bay: White-sand beach
Gusong Village (古松村), ☎ +86 13078915777. Ancient, unique, beautiful, non-commercial traditional Hainanese village, a hidden gem. Experience the living customs and traditional culture of the Hainanese. The villagers are accommodating and organize everything for visitors, including local ancient town tours and beautiful Tonggu Mountain tours. The village houses are bright and in beautiful undiscovered and isolated beaches. Private guided tourscan be booked with villagers. ¥50-100 per/person depending on the number of guests.
Abalone Farm, Longlou Town, Gusong Village (龙楼镇红海村委会古松村), ☎ +86 13876158836. Try shallow water diving for wild abalone. Abalone are not bi-valves like clams or oysters, but are actually a type of snail. The farm produces almost 100,000 abalone a year. The water is changed daily, dumped out through fine membranes to catch the microscopic young which are then laid back in clean water. Visitors can buy fresh live abalone at a very reasonable local farmer price (around ¥100 per 400g!). Most of the abalone production is delivered fresh.

Climate: Wenchange gets 1900-2100 hours of sunshine every year, and the annual precipitation is 1960-2400mm. The average annual temperature is 23.1-23.6 º C, (73.5-74.4º F). The average is 27-29 º C (80.6-84.2 º F) in July and 16-18 º C (60.8-64.4º F) in January.

Traffic Information
Road: East Highway, Hai-Wen freeway and Hai-Yu East Highway (223 national highway) are the main traffic routes to Wenchang.

Travel Tips

Severe thunderstorms can strike without warning in the summer. Carry your phone and camera in a waterproof bag just in case. The popular local dish, Wenchang Chicken, is traditionally served slightly bloody in the center. Now they are usually cooked thoroughly to avoid health risks, but it's best to check before consuming.
