　　Zhongwei is located in the middle-west of Ningxia, where the three provinces of Gansu, Ningxia, and Inner Mongolia meet. It governs the original Zhongwei County, Zhongning County, and Haiyuan County. With a total area of 170 thousand square km, the city has a population of 1.01 million, 31.7% of which are minority people, mainly Hui ethnic group.

　　Zhongwei is endowed with favorable agriculture production condition, which is the famous commodity grain, wolfberry, vegetables, and aquatic product production base in the whole nation. The irrigation area oriented grain production base and facility agriculture area have been formed under exploitation and construction of several years.

　　The main tourist areas for Zhongwei are Shapotou scenic spot, Zhongwei High Temple, and Sikou scenic spot, among which Shapotou scenic spot enjoys high reputation among the tourists both home and abroad. As the 5A state tourist area, Shapotou is a place that the Ningxia people take pride in, not only for its picturesque scenery, but also the miracle of the control of desertification. At present, the sand-control program has drawn in nearly 100enterprises and hundreds of thousands of farmers. They have planted medicinal herbs, such as wolfberry, fruit trees and other cash crops. The executive secretary and assistant secretary-general for the UN Convention on the Prevention and Control of Desertification Ham Arba Diallo once stated that “As a western region inhabited by ethnic minorities, Ningxia has been so creative in sand control and accumulated so much experience, that it has become of great significance and value in the prevention and control of desertification throughout the world”.
