Hanging Coffins Of The Bo People

Hanging Coffins Of The Bo People

Suspending or hanging the coffins was one of the funeral practices
of the Bo people in ancient China. Coffins of the deceased were
suspended in the precipitous rock clefts or on high cliffs, because
the Bo clans believed the location would make it easier for the
souls to reach the heaven. Today, vestiges of such funeral practices
can still be seen at the Dousha Pass (in Zhaotong Municipality,
Northeast Yunnan) where 9 suspended coffins remain on the vertical
cliffs, and the Dousha Pass has become the “Museum of Suspended
 Coffins” of China.
