Water Towns
In the suburbs of Shanghai as well as
in the neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, there are a number of
small towns featured bucolic scenes people might only see in the
traditional Chinese water and ink paintings. Plentiful |

waterways crisscross those small towns. What give them a unique
character are those cobblestone alleys, plain houses with pitch black
tiles and white-washed wall, and arched stone bridges. Dropping by those
small river-side eateries for a meal of fresh water fish and homely
dishes would be a new experience. 0f these water towns, the most famous
one is Zhouzhuang in Jiangsu Province, about 40 minutes car ride from
Shanghai. The nearest one is Zhujiajiao, located in the western suburbs
of Shanghai. The others include Tongli in Jiangsu Province, Wuzhen and
Xitang in Zhejiang Province.
