The Zhuang's Ox Soul Festival

The Zhuang peoples traditional of showing respect and love for ox is displayed to its fullest during the Ox Soul Festival, which falls on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, believed to be the birthday of the Ox King.  On the day, all farm work stops. Moreover, they bathe the animal and clean the cowsheds amidst the sounds of rhythmic drums. It is, of course, forbidden to beat any ox that day, to avoid scaring away the soul of the ox and thus creating unfavorable working conditions. Every farmers family conducts a ceremony to show respect to the animal at noon.
