Strong winds were unable to stop the fun at the 87th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Giant helium-filled versions of Snoopy and his parade pals have glided down the streets of Manhattan. We join the holiday festivities.
The big balloons are soaring - and so are the crowd’s spirits - as the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way through the streets of New York City on Thursday.
There’d been concerns that the wind might keep 16 giant balloons grounded for the first time in 40 years, but the parade goes off without a hitch.
Crowds along the route cheer a host of giant character balloons, including Snoopy, Spider-man, Hello Kitty and Spongebob.
The parade typically draws 3.5 million spectators and 50 million television viewers. It also features floats, marching bands, thousands of dancers, cheerleaders, and a large numbers of balloon handlers.
The star of the show is reserved for the end - Santa Claus closes the parade in a cloudburst of confetti, drawing cheers from the crowds as he passes by.
