270-degree cinema experience in South Korea

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- A new film format is giving viewers a panoramic experience which will be rolled out by the country's biggest cinema chain this month, using the walls of theatres as additional screens.

Coming soon for South Korean movie goers is a new and more immersive experience. Audiences will be able to watch films on three screens with a 270-degree panoramic view. It’s a new technology launched by South Korean cinema chain CGV called “Screen X”.

"We want Screen X to go beyond the 3D or 4D cinema experience," Chief Strategy Officer at CJ CGV An Goo-Choul said.

"The X" is the first film to use the technology. The 30-minute thriller premiered at Asia’s biggest film festival in Busan in early October.

"I think the film appealed to the audience in its short time of 30 minutes, but I was little disappointed by the plot," college student Hwang Ji-sung said.

Director Kim Jee-Woon explains that he’s just a pioneer with this new and exciting technology, but that there’s more to come. "I made this film as a teaser for Screen X technology, so I hope more talented visual story tellers will be able to tell a new story and show new images with this," Kim said.

But the new technology comes with a price - "The X" cost some 900,000 U.S. dollars to produce.

The cinema chain is set to install the format in 31 cinemas around the country, aiming to screen a series of feature films over the coming year. (Source: CNTV.cn)
