November 2-6, 2013 will witness the New Year celebration of Qiang ethnic group in the ancient Shuimo Town and the Tibetan village in Sanjiang Town, Wenchuan County themed “New Year in Picturesque Shuimo and Sanjiang”.
The New Year of Qiang ethnic group on November 3, 2013 (or October 1 in the lunar calendar) is the most important festival to celebrate good harvest and pray for fortune and peace. According to their custom, Qiang people will offer sacrifices to the divine spirits of the heaven, mountains and the villages, followed by a reunion banquet with “Za” wine and “shalang” dance till hearts’ content. The ceremony is presided by Shibi (priest of a Qiang community) and the wine jars unsealed by the most respected senior of the village. Celebration of the New Year of Qiang ethnic group was included in the List of the First Group of Intangible Cultural Heritages of Sichuan Province in 2006 and inscribed on the National List of the Second Group of Intangible Cultural Heritages in June 2008.
